The Zorn Bio
- Graduate of the University of Michigan
- After a four month internship at the Miami Herald, he started working at the Chicago Tribune in 1980 where he has been ever since
- He is publicly affiliates with the Democratic Party
At first look, I would have thought that Eric Zorn would possess some of the same downfalls as my last columnist, Frank Bruni. They both profess to be Democrats, and they make sure that they let their readers know it no matter what they are writing about. They will do anything to promote the Democratic party and offer tips for how their party can win elections: "At least for the short term, Democrats need to bank on Fear as well, with no lies necessary". But, it is the way in which Zorn writes and organizes his pieces that makes him so much more appealing than Bruni. Zorn is absolutely masterful in his use of concise, one-sentence claims that convey an argument as well as a tone to the reader. Here is an example: "Hope stirs voters. Fear galvanizes and excites them". There isn't much volume here, but you can definitely understand the message that Zorn is trying to get across. Although he is aggressive about stating his opinions, he manages not to lose credibility in doing so. For the most part, he is always respectful and understanding of counterarguments and viewpoints.
